This dilemma isn’t something going unnoticed. Ironically, the President of the USCBB, just happens to be the Archbishop of the Archdiocese for Military Services.
The problem cannot be solved at this level, however. It can’t even be solved at the bishop’s level in my home diocese. Everyone is vying for priests in their diocese. Keeping a seminarian opens more opportunities within that diocese. We are hurting for priests in more than one diocese. It is not uncommon for a priest to be responsible for more than one parish.
The dilemma must be solved in the hearts of individual priest’s hearts. It takes a special person to join the military. It takes an even more special person to tend to the military’s spiritual needs.
Have you brought this up with someone like your bishop? It is a very dire problem to solve.
